More on Modeling-Splitting Apart

Splitting apart is an excellent technique to use when a child can say a particular sound in isolation but cannot say it at the word level. For example; Jimmy can say the 'K' sound by itself but when he attempts to say the word 'cap' it comes out as 'tap." Below is how to use splitting apart to help Jimmy say the 'k' sound in the word 'cap.'

*The teacher first splits the word apart:

Teacher: Say "K"

Child: 'K"

Teacher: Say "ap"

Child: "ap"

The teacher then gradually puts the word together having the child say what she said each time;

K...........................ap

K.................ap

K.......ap

K...ap

Kap (cap)

This is a very easy and powerful method. Depending on how the child is doing you may vary the number of word splits and time between.
